How do you first become aware of data breach affecting a third-party software or service you use?
For most of us, we come news articles detailing the latest company to fall victim to compromised systems and further risk of customer data and proprietary information being publicly released or sold. Or, you may have been notified directly by the impacted third-party.
If your data is included in a leak, you may likely already be being targeted by cyber criminals seeking easy profits by attempting to access your systems or impersonating you and/or your business.
How else can we identify when our data has been compromised?
Signs to watch for include;
Unusual activity in your financial accounts and statements.
Unusual login attempts (e.g. outside operational hours, unrecognised or unused user account, multiple failed password attempts, unusual location).
You’re being contacted payment of invoices or debts that you are unaware of.
You receive notifications about application you haven’t lodged (e.g. government payments).
You stop receiving important emails or letters.
A client or supplier informs you that they’re receiving unusual or suspicious contact from someone claiming to be a representative of your business.
How can we take action when we’re impacted by a data breach?
Contact financial institutions IMMEDIATELY, including banks, credit companies, superannuation funds. Report any suspicious activity.
Change passwords for ALL online accounts. Use strong, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA).
